The first record of trap shooting in Butte was in 1887, at the Butte Rod and Gun Club. Records of the location of this facility are lacking and therefore a topic of debate amongst local trapshooters as to the actual club location in 1887.
In 1898, when the Butte Rod and Gun Club hosted the 5th Annual State tournament, the location was given as taking the Boulevard Car to reach the shooting grounds. The late Bob Poore stated that the club was on the edge of Timber Butte. By 1913, the directions cited within the Annual State Tournament program directed shooters to the location described as "On the Racetrack, just inside the center field and in plain sight of the grandstands" followed by directions to take the Racetrack streetcar. Sometime in early 1920, the club was moved to the rifle range and the 1930 program gave directions to three miles west of town. The next move was to the present location with the first reference to this location being in 1938 at the P.I.T.A Western Championship program giving direction to 10 miles south of Butte on Highway 10.
The Butte Rod and Gun Club Medal was started in 1898, at that long-forgotten club location. The Medal remains a feature event at the annual Montana State Trap Shoot. Each winner's name is added to the medal with a gold bar. As of 2023, the medal length is 125 bars long, with a new bar added each year. The Butte Rod and Gun Club Medal stands as one of the longest competitive traditions in Montana Trapshooting. Our club is proud to continue this tradition and ensure that the legacy of trapshooting excellence is carried long into the future.
